We complete our own in-house testing. Please see below an overview of the testing that you may be referred to us for.

  • Complex Lung Function Test
There are two parts to this test:

    1. Spirometry

There are no pre testing requirements that you need to do.

Please take all of your normal medications prior to this test.

This test measures the volume of air you inhale and exhale as well as how quickly you can exhale. It also measures the difference between your lung capacity pre and post inhaler.

It is a common tool to diagnose lung conditions such as asthma and COPD.

What to expect – you sit in a chair, place a clip on your nose, you breathe in and out of the mouthpiece and you are given instructions by the respiratory technician.

    2. Gas Transfer

There are no pre testing requirements that you need to do.

Please take all of your normal medications prior to this test.

This test measures how well the lungs transfer oxygen from the lungs into the bloodstream and how well the carbon dioxide moves out of the bloodstream into the lungs.

What to expect – you sit in a chair, place a clip on your nose, you breathe in and out of the mouthpiece and you are given instructions by the respiratory technician.

This test takes approximately 45 minutes.

    This test is bulkbilled.

  • Six Minute Walk Test

There are no pre testing requirements that you need to do. But we do recommend that you wear closed in shoes that are comfortable to walk in. If you use a walker or aid please bring this with you for this test. This test is conducted outside on a flat surface under cover.

Please take all of your normal medications prior to this test.

This test is a self paced walking test and it assesses your exercise capacity.

What to expect – you go outside, the tech measures your blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation and they will ask a few simple questions.

A monitor is then placed on your wrist and this is checked every minute by the tech. This is monitoring your heart rate and oxygen saturations. At the end of the 6 minute walk at the 8 minute mark your blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation are taken and again at 11 minute mark.

This test takes approximately 45 minutes.

    This test is bulkbilled.

  • Bronchial Provocation Test

You will need to cease ALL inhalers for two weeks prior to this test, except for Ventolin which can be used for up to one day prior.

Please take all of your other normal medications prior to this test.

This test is useful in the diagnosis of asthma where spirometry is normal. This test mimics the process which occurs when you are exposed to triggers such as grasses, pollens or exercise. The test is done by inhaling incremental amounts of a powder called Mannitol and it takes approximately 45 minutes.

What to expect – you sit in a chair, place a clip on your nose, and you will breathe in the Mannitol through an inhaler. After each dose you will do a breathing test and you will be monitored to see if any changes to your breathing have occurred.

This test takes approximately 45 minutes.

Due to the cost of the medication used in this test there is a fee payable on the day. You will be quoted this fee when your appointment is booked.

  • Body Plethysmography

There are no pre testing requirements that you need to do.

Please take all of your normal medications prior to this test.

This test measures the total volume of air in the lungs, including the air that remains after a normal exhalation.

What to expect – you will sit in our sealed testing chamber and you breathe in and out whilst changes in pressure and volume are measured.

This test takes approximately 45 minutes.

    This test is bulkbilled.

  • MIPS (Maximal Inspiratory Pressure) & MEPS (Maximal Expiratory Pressure)

There are no pre testing requirements that you need to do.

Please take all of your normal medications prior to this test.

This test measures your inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength involved in breathing in and out.

What to expect - you sit in a chair, place a clip on your nose and following the technicians instructions.

This test takes approximately 45 minutes.

    This test is bulkbilled.

  • Sleep Study – Home Based

We do our own “in house” sleep study. You will be given an appointment at the end of the day at approximately 4:15pm where you will be fitted with our sleep study machine. Please refer to the patient information sheet provided to you for preparation for your home sleep study.

This test measures your sleep patterns and body functions during sleep and it helps diagnose disorders such as sleep apnoea.

What to expect – sensors are placed on your head, chest and legs and it this measures your brain activity, heart rate, breathing and leg movements. You will wear the machine and sensors home and sleep with them on and remove them the next morning as per the instructions given.

The setup appointment takes approximately 45 minutes.

There is a cost involved for this test. You will be quoted this fee when your appointment is booked.
